Happy July! 🥳
Yesterday was a big day for Apple with updates across their Apple Creator Studio suite of products.
The official press release explains:
Apple Creator Studio gets smarter, faster and more connected
Updates bring new integrations with Pixelmator Pro across Final Cut Pro, Keynote, Pages and Numbers; even more intelligent tools in Final Cut Pro; the ability to generate shapes to further customise a project; and a new Producer Project in Logic Pro
Given there's so many talented creators that get early access to the Final Cut Pro update prior to launch, I didn't bother to rush out a post yesterday, but instead spent the day cutting on Final Cut Pro 12.3 on a real-world job to see how it goes.
Good news - it was rock solid, I didn't run across any issues, and actually used a bunch of the new features, such as Detect Edits, and the new Super Highlights control in the Color Adjustments effect.
However, as there are user interface changes, and an updated FxPlug v4.3.5 SDK, developers may have to make changes to make 3rd party plugins work correctly with the update - for example, I need to make some changes to CommandPost for certain features.
Despite the new features, there's no update to FCPXML - it's still on FCPXML v1.14. There's also no changes to the Workflow Extensions SDK.
This release is great one. It has a bunch of incredibly useful features, yet it doesn't bloat the user interface, or complicated things - it's just a bunch of incremental improvements that simply make Final Cut Pro better.
Interestingly, it seems like the Vision Pro team is working very closely with the Compressor team, as there's lot of bugs fixes and enhancements for Immersive workflows.
I'll post more about the Final Cut Pro update over the coming weeks, as I really put it through it's paces.
In the meantime...
Iain Anderson wrote a great blog post on ProVideo Coalition about the Final Cut Pro update.
In terms of YouTube videos talking about the update, you can't go past:
Alex "4D" Gollner also wrote a blog post on his website with links to many articles and videos.
The official release notes state:
Final Cut Pro v12.3 includes these features, enhancements, and fixes:
Powerful intelligence features:
- Use Generate Captions to quickly add subtitles and easily customize their look to create accessible, ready-to-share content for social media and video platforms. (Requires a Mac with Apple silicon, available in U.S. English only).
- Isolate recognized objects with Auto Mask to effortlessly color correct or enhance your video, eliminating the need for manual tracking.
- Match your video's color across different cameras, lighting conditions, and cinematic styles with the all-new Match Color tool, unifying the look of your timeline.
- Analyze any rendered video with Edit Detection to reveal its shot changes and automatically split it into separate clips with just a click.
Workflow Enhancements:
- Accurately fine-tune your edits with a persistent two-up display that stays locked in view while you're trimming in the timeline using keyboard shortcuts or with the Precision Editor.
- Send any frame directly to Pixelmator Pro with one click, streamlining your workflow for custom thumbnails and social media graphics.
- Instantly swap clip positions in the primary storyline with a new keyboard shortcut for faster editing.
- Easily copy and paste complex edits across timelines with a new option to select a primary storyline clip and all its connected media simultaneously.
- Proxy media is now generated using HEVC instead of H.264, for improved compression efficiency and HDR support.
- Background rendering is now set to Off by default.
- Easily convert existing closed captions to subtitles.
- Quickly select all subtitles with a single command.
- Adjust the position, rotation, scale, alignment, and other parameters for multiple selected subtitles at once from the inspector.
Bug fixes:
- Fixes an issue that could cause segmented RAW media files to not open if the original media was copied into the library first.
- Fixes an issue that caused mixed photo and video assets recorded in a different time zone to be sorted incorrectly by creation date in the browser.
- Fixes an issue that could cause Final Cut Pro to quit when exporting more than one project using the Export File preset.
- Fixes an issue that could cause a damaged library alert to appear.
- Fixes an issue that caused proxies generated from Canon Log and other log-encoded formats to have a noticeable color tint.
Compressor v5.3 includes the following enhancements and fixes:
- View immersive, temporal, and dynamic metadata before encoding with the new immersive metadata viewer.
- Encode 180º video to view on Apple Vision Pro with 180º Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP) support.
- Preview stereoscopic video with a new anaglyph view option
- Added a 5.1 AAC audio option to Apple Device export settings.
- Added support for data rate limits when encoding to HEVC with Apple silicon devices.
- Added support for transcoding immersive sources without WAV file to Apple Immersive outputs.
- Fixes an issue where changes to the camera log menu in the inspector could not be undone.
- Fixes an issue where changing field order, colorspace, or start timecode on a source file incorrectly reset the spatial metadata.
- Fixes an issue where dragging certain files from Photos into Compressor resulted in an unusable job with an erroneous "A media extension is missing or turned off" message.
- Fixes a crash that occurred when previewing a setting applied to a job whose source file was previously missing but had since become available.
- Includes stability and performance improvements.
Motion v6.3 includes the following features, enhancements, and fixes:
- Import SVG files that scale to any size and keep graphics razor-sharp at any resolution.
- Take command of your timeline with intuitive new controls that let you instantly stagger, cascade, or reverse clips to build complex animations in seconds.
- Work faster and stay focused with performance updates that keep your workflow fluid and responsive.
- Fixes an issue where 3D Motion templates appeared flat in Final Cut Pro.
- Fixes a crash that could occur when adjusting Object Tracker regions.
- Fixes a crash related to shape onscreen controls during playback.
- Fixes a crash that could occur when using the Keyer's color selection control in the inspector.
- Fixes an issue where changes made to keyframe timing for third-party FxPlug effects in the timeline were lost when the project was closed.
- Fixes a regression where high-value keyframes were cropped at the top edge of the Keyframe Editor.
- Fixes an issue where saving a project in a vertical snapshot would offset the anchor point of a title background by 1 pixel with each save.
- Fixes an issue where dragging to select vertices on a Bezier Mask did not work.
- Fixes an issue where 3D text and particle emitters occasionally used the wrong texture media during playback.
- Fixes an issue where some color correction filters rendered visibly brighter on macOS 26 than on previous releases.
- Includes additional stability and performance improvements.
FxPlug v4.3.5 contains the following changes:
- Improved stability and reliability.
- FxPlug SDK requires macOS 13.0 (Ventura) or later.
- Fixed a crash when the user deletes a plugin during analysis.
- Fixed a crash in the parameter handler due to an assertion failure.
- Fixed an issue with FxRemoteTiming where plugin was retrieving the incorrect value for start time of the input.
- Fixed a crash in setStateForPlugIn caused by a lifetime issue with the mutex.
- Fixed an issue where FxPlugs could render incorrectly after the length of the MotionEffect is changed by the user when resizing the clip, title, transition, or generator in the timeline.
- Fixed a potential hang when cancelling an analysis.
- Fixed a texture resolution discrepancy between FCP 12 and FCP 11.1.1 where frames were larger than expected.
- Added a new method to FxTimingAPI that allows plug-ins to detect whether the timeline is using drop-frame or non-drop-frame timecode.
- Fixed an issue where drop zones feeding auxiliary images to FxPlugs always used the first frame regardless of the selected frame.
- Fixed a crash in Final Cut Pro related to nested parameter change handling.
- Improved responsiveness of FxPlug on-screen controls in Final Cut Pro 12.
In other news, ScriptStar v1.6.0 (Build 31) is out now with the following improvements:
🔨 Improvements:
-
File-based transcription
-
If you drag one or more audio or video files from the Finder (not FCP) to the ScriptStar window, they will be locally transcribed using your chosen model. This lets you create a transcription (PDF/DOC/CSV) or SRT for any file, including output from FCP or any other app.
-
ScriptStar can now be used as a transcription tool without Final Cut Pro.
-
Length limits
-
You can define the maximum number of characters or words in ScriptStar's output.
-
This applies to transcripts sent back to FCP as Named Favorites (or Notes on Keywords) as well as the limits for SRTs.
-
Controlling the maximum number of characters or words in each line sent back to FCP allows you to control their width, making it easier to work with a smaller Browser.
-
Please note, because each line of dialogue must be separated from the next by at least one frame, we advise keeping this value above 80 characters to avoid too many discontinuities.
-
Controlling the maximum number of characters or words in an SRT caption file can be set as low as one word per caption.
-
This allows you to make sure your captions aren’t too long to be read, and also to use tools that convert FCP captions or SRT files to burned-in word-by-word captions.
You can download and learn more on the ScriptStar website.
Thanks team!
