# Immersive

This page is dedicated to stuff that Chris Hocking finds interesting about Immersive workflows related to Final Cut Pro workflows.

This is very much an evolving space - so if you find something interesting online, please share!

This is NOT an area I'm an expert in, so please reach out if there's any mistakes!


# BRAW Toolbox

As of today, BRAW Toolbox v1.5.0 (79) has the following Immersive exclusive feature:

We've added a "Video Track" parameter in the "Quality" section for Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive clips - so you can pick between the left or right lens. You can then put two of the same Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive clip next to each other in a Final Cut Pro timeline, to do side-by-side immersive editing. Thanks for suggesting Iain Anderson!

Using this method you can kinda of "hack together" a workflow where you do the offline edit in Final Cut Pro, then send a FCPXML to DaVinci Resolve to "fix up" and deliver to Apple Compressor.

I am currently working on adding more Immersive functionality to BRAW Toolbox, so that you can edit and DELIVER directly from Final Cut Pro, with no DaVinci Resolve needed.

This page is essentially documenting my explorations as I go down this path (as I currently don't own or have easy access to an Apple Vision Pro or Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera.

# Terminology

Here's some of the terms that might pop up whilst you're researching Apple Immersive Videos:

AIV (Apple Immersive Video) A premium immersive-video format from Apple for Apple Vision Pro playback. In Apple’s own wording, it’s "the highest quality immersive experience for video playback" with immersive audio. 

Viewer-facing shorthand: Apple Support also describes Apple Immersive Video titles as "180-degree 8K recordings, captured with Spatial Audio". 

AIME (Apple Immersive Media Embedded) The static metadata that enables correct playback—especially camera/lens calibration and other "presentation metadata". Depending on the workflow, you’ll encounter AIME either as a separate metadata file (i.e. from set) or embedded as a metadata track.

You can create an AIME file using the VenueDescriptor API.

AIVU (Apple Immersive Video Universal) A packaged container used for review/testing and delivery workflows. Apple Immersive Video Utility can package a folder of components into a single AIVU — typically including high-bit-rate MV-HEVC video, AIME metadata, audio, and an optional presentation track.

The only thing you need to make a ⁨AIVU⁩ is:

  • Apple Immersive Video MV-HEVC video file without any necessary metadata.
  • An ⁨AIME⁩ file with the correct camera calibrations OR an ⁨USDZ⁩ file to use for camera calibration (instead of an ⁨AIME)⁩ file AND a dynamic mask JSON data file to use for camera calibration.

This file is a binary file (so can't be opened in a text editor, etc).

Apple Immersive Video Utility (often shortened to "AIVU Utility" or "AIVU app") A Mac + Vision Pro companion toolset for importing, organizing, packaging (AIVU), and reviewing Apple Immersive Video—Mac provides a 2D management UI, while Vision Pro is used for immersive review. 

MV-HEVC (Multi-View HEVC) The video coding format commonly referenced in Apple’s AIVU packaging flow — for example, when you import a folder of "high-bit-rate MV-HEVC video files" to package as AIVU. 

HLS (.m3u8) — HTTP Live Streaming The streaming delivery mechanism used in these workflows. Apple Immersive Video Utility can ingest an HTTPS HLS .m3u8 playlist that points at an AIVU with complete video/audio/metadata. 

APMP (Apple Projected Media Profile) A projected-media profile that supports immersive formats like 180, 360, and Wide-FOV video. It differentiates formats via "projection kind" (rectilinear vs half-equirectangular vs equirectangular vs parametric). 

Parametric projection / ProjectionKind A projection mode associated with Apple Immersive Video that relies on lens calibration metadata (part of what AIME provides) to map pixels correctly at playback time. 

Presentation track An optional track/file included in an AIVU package (alongside MV-HEVC, AIME, and audio) to carry additional presentation data. 

ASAF (Apple Spatial Audio Format) Apple’s production format for immersive audio in these workflows. 

APAC (Apple Positional Audio Codec) The codec Apple calls out for encoding positional/immersive audio for delivery. 

ILPD + motion comfort data (AIV-specific metadata)

Examples of AIV-specific metadata Apple highlights for creating/playing back compelling AIV experiences. 

Static foveation An Apple Immersive Video feature discussed as part of the format/tooling story—described as a unique capability for final encodes in Apple’s immersive media sessions. 

Edge blend curve Per-shot metadata that can feather/transition edges at playback time (described as dynamic rather than a baked mask). 


# Immersive Video Workflow Presentations

# DaVinci Resolve Quick Start

This is just some notes to quickly get up and running in DaVinci Resolve.

For a much more detailed tutorial watch the Beginner’s Guide video below.

In Preferences, in the Video and Audio I/O panel make sure you tick Enable Ambisonics and Enable Apple Spatial Audio Format.

In Project Settings in the Master Settings, tick Enable Apple Immersive workflow and change the Timeline resolution to 8160x7200 Immersive.

In the Color Management panel set to:

  • Color science: DaVinci YRGB
  • Use seperate color space and gamma: Ticked
  • Timeline color space: DaVinci WG / DaVinci Intermediate
  • Output color space: P3-D65 / Rec.2100 ST2084

If you're working with Blackmagic RAW, you can reduce the BRAW decode quality if needed for performance for editing (then put back to full resolution for export).

Import some Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive clips into your timeline.

In the viewer dropdown, you can select Immersive.

Once you've done that you can change the view:

In Viewport mode, you can drag around the viewer to "look around".

When editing, only use the Cross Dissolve and Dip to Color Dissolve (setting it to black) transitions to avoid making your viewer vomit. Click the Render Bypass checkbox, so that the transition isn't "baked in" when exporting - and will be included as metadata instead.

When exporting, at the end of the export presets is the Vision Pro options.

Vision Pro Review is useful for quick exports for testing.

Vision Pro Bundle exports a ProRes master.

In Advanced Settings there's an option for visionOS Bypass. Set it to Always will make it always use the metadata (as opposed to "baking in" transitions and effects).

When you export, DaVinci Resolve gives you:

  • An AIME file.
  • A FCPXML file with special metadata inside.

# Example FCPXML Metadata

When you export an Immersive file from DaVinci Resolve, it gives you a FCPXML. This FCPXML has some special/unique metadata that you wouldn't see coming out of Final Cut Pro.

For example, I have a simple timeline with three clips and some transitions between them:

There's a great video from WWDC 2025 called Explore video experiences for visionOS.

The description is:

# Immersive Media Support

Apple has a Developer Framework called Immersive Media Support, which enables you to create custom workflows for processing Apple Immersive Video (AIV).

You can use it to read and write AIV-specific metadata and enable previewing content in editorial workflows.

There's also a sample Xcode project for Authoring Apple Immersive Video.


# Apple Immersive Video Utility

Apple Immersive Video Utility on macOS lets you import, organize, package, and review Apple Immersive Video media through a 2D interface. And when you combine it with Apple Immersive Video Utility on visionOS, you can review your immersive video on Apple Vision Pro.
